Why we built Destinae
Nine years ago, I — Jean-Christophe — was using another dating app, the same as everyone else. Endless swiping, very little to actually go on beyond a photo and a two-line bio.
I grew up in New Caledonia, a small French territory in the South Pacific, and I'd always been curious about Chinese zodiac compatibility — the traditional relationships between birth-year animals that Chinese astrology has tracked for centuries. So, half out of curiosity and half out of frustration with generic swiping, I started paying attention to birth years. And I noticed something: the profiles I felt the strongest, most natural connection with kept sharing one of two signs with mine — Ox or Rabbit.
Not long after, I matched with a woman named Eileen, born in Venezuela. We ended up meeting in person in Miami. Her sign? Ox.
Given where we're each from — opposite sides of the world, completely different cultures, thousands of miles apart — the odds of us ever crossing paths at all were already slim. That we did, and that the one pattern I'd started noticing turned out to hold, is what planted the idea for this app.
After Eileen and I got married, people naturally started asking how we met. In telling the story, I'd sometimes walk single friends through the same approach — looking at birth years, checking the traditional compatibility relationships, being a little more deliberate about who they gave a real chance to. Over time, seven of those friends ended up married.
That's really where Destinae came from: not a claim that zodiac compatibility is scientifically proven — it isn't, and we don't pretend otherwise — but a real tool built from a real personal pattern, one that held up enough times, for enough people we actually know, that it felt worth building properly instead of just being something I mentioned at dinner parties.
